“Pain lives silently within, invisible yet impossible to ignore" - Elliot Lennon

The Unfortunate Reality of Chronic Pain.

“Confined to Home” is a soundscape composition that captures a very personal portrayal of living with chronic back pain, caused by a recurring herniated disk. The composition is situated entirely within the familiar, isolating environment of my home and backyard, which is ironic as I was experiencing a flare up during the creation of this piece, which prevented me from leaving my home. This piece sonically narrates the politics of injury and physical pain, which has negatively affected my quality of life for the past two years. Through layered sounds including my heartbeat, heavy breathing, pill bottles rattling and more, this composition takes you through a day in my house, while I experience a flare up. The piece goes through the entirety of a flare up, from the onset, to treatment, and back to normality. Included are sonic representations of discomfort and immobility, and the isolated resilience that is needed to cope with chronic pain. Ultimately, “Confined to Home” invites listeners into a very personal space, while encouraging awareness and understanding regarding the struggle of chronic pain that affects so many people everyday.
